ELEPHANT PLAINS LODGE Situated in the Sabi Sand Wildtuin, adjacent to the Kruger National Park, Elephant Plains Game Lodge provides a relaxing and wonderful safari retreat. Elephant Plains Lodge is situated on the banks of the Manyeleti river and hence has unforgettable views over the surrounding plain. The lodge offers stylish, comfortable and affordable luxury in luxury and standard chalets. A maximum of 22 guests are accommodated at Elephant Plains, ensuring personal service in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
LUXURY SUITES There are 6 luxury suites at Elephant Plains Lodge with beautiful glass fronts, and the design and architecture blend in superbly with the surroundings. The open plan suites each have a lounge, double bedroom and a private sun-deck that has spectacular views over the riverbed. All of the luxury suites feature air-conditioning, overhead fans, wood fires, mosquito nets and a safe. The beautiful en-suite bathrooms feature relaxing bathtubs as well as indoor / outdoor showers, giving you the best of both worlds..
RONDAVEL The lodge features five spacious appointed thatched rondavels tastefully decorated with an African theme. Every rondavel has its own distinct character and comfortable charm, and looks out over the beautifully landscaped garden and which often affords exciting game viewing from your own bedroom. The rondavels have en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning, overhead fans, mini bars, tea/coffee facilities, mosquito nets and electronic safes.
GUEST AREAS There is a main lodge which houses the reception area, a wine cellar and curio shop. There is a lovely dining room and a bar & lounge which provide an ideal place to relax in a sociable setting. For those quieter hours there is a library of interesting reading material provided for guests. Adjacent to the sparkling swimming pool, there is a wooden deck with spectacular views over the scenic plain. The pool deck also overlooks a watering hole opposite the lodge, where animals come to drink daily.
DINING Each meal is prepared with exquisite care and this together with the setting of the open-air boma or thatched lapa , ensure an unforgettable dining experience. Mealtimes are mouth-watering events complemented by carefully selected wines from the Lodge's well-stocked cellar. Breakfasts and lunches are usually taken in the gracious dining room, whilst dinners are held under starlit skies in the open boma, weather permitting.
ACTIVITIES Although running to a set program of events, there is a natural progression of the days activities, combined with many opportunities to relax and enjoy a siesta, so the exciting game viewing is never too tiring. There are safaris in 4x4 safari vehicles during the early mornings and afternoons from Elephant Plains Lodge. Afternoon game drives include sundowner cocktails, and when dark, spotlight safaris provide the opportunity to view nocturnal creatures and carnivores which are frequently seen on the hunt. With the use of 4x4 safari vehicles, the rangers are able to go off-road, and are not limited only to the road network, making for very exciting drives. Walks are conducted after breakfast.
CHILDREN
Children are made to feel very welcome at Elephant Plains Lodge. However, game drives are strictly subject to the approval of the ranger. Children under 6 years of age are not able to go on standard game drives.
GETTING THERE Entry to Elephant Plains is through Gowrie Gate, which is the only gate for entry into the northern section of Sabi Sand. Due to river crossings it is not possible to use any of the other gates in Sabi Sand or to travel through the reserve (open between 5:00 and 23:00) . Entrance Fee @ R 60.00 per car. Airports: There are the airports of Eastgate (Hoedspruit), Skukuza and Nelspruit in close proximity which have daily scheduled flights to and from Johannesburg . There is also a daily scheduled flight to and from Cape Town to Hoedspruit . Chartered and private flights can land on our airstrip, which is grassed and well maintained.
DIRECTIONS Take the N4 from JHB / Pretoria . Bypass Witbank and Middelburg , continue onto Belfast . Turn left onto the R540 past Dullstroom to Lydenburg . From Lydenburg take the R36 to Origstad . Pass through the JG Strijdom Tunnel . From the tunnel continue for approx . 27 km before turning right to go towards Klaserie . Continue straight along the Klaserie road until you reach a sign pointing to Orpen & South African Activities College . Turn left and continue on the R531 for about 30 km until you see the entrance to the South African Activities College on your left hand side . Immediately after the College you will see a small dirt track which you have to take right off the tar road. Follow the map as indicated
ARRIVAL You should time your arrival at Elephant Plains to be there between 13:00 - 15:00 so that you will be in time for the afternoon game drive that starts at 16:30. On the day of your departure it will be appreciated if you vacate your room before 11:00
WHAT TO BRING Anti-malaria tablets and / or insect repellent, sunhat, sunscreen, sunglasses, comfortable walking shoes, camera & plenty of spare film, binoculars, light safari clothing for daytime, warm clothing for night time and game drives. Smart casual attire is recommended for evenings. Swimming costumes are highly recommended all year round.
