Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park offers an unforgettable game viewing experience with three hides to choose from. To get the most out of your wildlife encounter, make sure you plan a visit during the dry season between June and October - ideally around sunrise or midday! Patience is essential; making time for longer sessions at each hide can pay off in spades when it comes to sightings.
Hluhluwe is an area with a low risk of malaria transmission; however, it is important to take the necessary precautions to ensure your health and safety during your visit. Make sure to speak with your doctor or a travel clinic prior to travelling, as they can provide you with the necessary medical advice and the recommended malaria prevention measures for this region. These preventive measures include using insect repellent at night, as well as wearing long-sleeved clothing in the evenings when possible.
Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park is home to a variety of wild animals, including lions, leopards, black rhino, southern white rhino buffalos hippos and crocodiles and the best place to view hippos and crocodiles is on the Hluhluwe River and the Hluhluwe Dam. It's important to take safety precautions when exploring the self-guided trails; these magnificent creatures are unpredictable by nature so remaining alert at all times will promote a safe journey! For overnight guests staying at Hilltop Camp and Resort must be aware that although fenced off there may still exist potential risks during dark hours - it's advised you remain close within your assigned area for optimal protection against any unwelcome surprises after sundown.
Keep your chalet secure while you spend time outdoors while staying in the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park as leaving food unattended and having windows or doors open could attract monkey visitors. To be proactive, refrain from displaying fruits outside the home - this will discourage any potential primate guests!
To ensure a sanitary environment in the area, please help us keep oil and sugar spills to a minimum as they may attract ants.
Despite the Hluhluwe Imfolozi park's designation as a low risk malaria area , visitors should stay vigilant against malaria by using insect repellent and wearing clothing that covers their exposed skin in the evening. In addition, mosquito coils or mats can provide extra protection at night while prophylactic medications may be an option for those concerned about contracting this disease.
When exploring the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park, take precautions against "pepper" ticks - their bites can cause intense irritation and may transmit tick-bite fever. Applying Byticol to skin and clothing helps repel them. If bitten, consult a doctor to properly treat the potentially severe illness.
Doing a guided walk in the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park is rewarding, but be sure to protect yourself. Tuck your trousers into socks when navigating the bush and carry medicated soap to quickly deal with any tick bites you find on yourself. If an itchy rash develops over time after visiting a rural area, apply antihistamine cream for relief before seeking medical attention if flu-like symptoms soon arise—such as fever or headaches—and the bite site looks red and inflamed two days later.
